VOGUE: Critical Approaches

I am working for the best fashion magazine Vogue and I have decided that I am going to add in a new for the magazine and that feature will be of the readers’ best fashion outfits and this means the readers of Vogue send in, via email there images of their own with their favourite outfit on and analyse the image saying where the clothing is from and the costs, and every month the best outfit chosen by an online panel will choose which get featured from a selection of 5 that are sent in first from the viewers. I think that this is a great idea to take on for magazine and I think it will get much more people reading the magazine. The reason for why I think it will be a huge success is because if you have frequent readers like you do chances are that they are highly interested in fashion as Vogue is a fashion magazine and the fact that the viewers could get recognition on their favourite magazine will make it more exciting for readers also a lot of people generally would love the idea of their photos being in a magazine so it makes it great in order for people to get some sort of recognition. As known Vogue UK magazine is the world’s most powerful fashion magazine and it was launched in the year of 1916. Vogue covers many areas within fashion, from daily news, celebrity interviews, blogs from the fashion designers and beauty teams, health, food and drink and entertainment, Vogue is published in four main forms: Magazine, Online, Mobile and Tablet and I think that this is great because you can keep the magazine app with you and you can even save your favourite issue so if your outfit was to get chosen for the magazine then you can happily save it and show others even when the new articles are out. Vogue magazine is issued monthly and is mostly targeted at young women aged between 20 to 40 years, who are successful as well as beautiful and who want to be aware of all the novelties of fashion and beauty.

These are mostly wealthy woman, but editors try to maximize the target audience of the journal, focusing on the fact that high fashion is accessible to all, not only for the elite, so again this to me shows that the new feature which I would like to provide for the magazine will be great as it will be something which will get a lot of young female readers interested in, also as I have researched online I have found out that a lot of females between these ages post a lot of fashion outfits on blogs and the post their favourite OOTD (outfit of the day) on their blogs showing you what they wore and what accessories matched the outfits, an example of a blogger which does this is a young female blogger called Leena and her page link is www.leenaguiger.blogspot.com

To me her blog posts are great, I think the way she shows us her outfits are very professional as they are presented in a really great way, the way she matches all the accessories with her clothing goes very well and as a whole her style is great and she gives good style inspiration as well as make up inspiration to other females of the same age. The photography quality is great on the blog too as it is very professional looking as a high quality style camera has been used with great focus as well as clarity. The locations of the shoots are also very different and this is great because the locations go with the outfits and it sets the scenes nicely. The audience of Vogue the magazine all have different lifestyles, professions; hobbies, interests and life values, but they all share a common interest in fashion and beauty. So the first aim of the magazine is to provide to target audience the latest and the most interesting information about beauty and fashion. Vogue offers a variety of articles that are presented to inform women about the latest news on fashion trends, about the fashion shows and fashion festivals, as well as news from the designers world and the world of models.

So, it can be assumed that the magazine is intended for women who are rather young, wealthy and successful. For such women to know about the latest news of fashion and beauty world is a must, that is why woman should read Vogue magazine, in order to be aware of the latest fashion trends in the world and respond to these trends and i think that the new feature which I would like to feature for vogue will be great for the female audience as all the readers could get inspiration from one another as the clothing which will be wore by the females who send in their outfits could also be high street fashion which will be great in order to save money for the audience instead of buying branded items because this feature could come to be very strong and make people think differently about what they wear and how much they spend on their clothing. The December 2014 edition of Vogue shows the title of the magazine is in pink and bold font. It covers up the majority of the top centre of the cover, and as this use of typeface is iconic to the magazine, it is instantly recognisable to not just for people who read the magazine, but also for the general public because of the style. The main image on this edition is of the model Kate Moss. The image is of her face and it takes up the whole page, and is central so it is the thing that catches the audience's’ attention first. She is looking directly into the camera, which will appeal to the audience, as they will think she is looking at them. By putting an image of Kate Moss on the front, people that like her as a model will want to buy the magazine to read the article about her and find out more. Kate Moss has been chosen to be the main image as she is an icon to many young and older women and has her own fashion sense, which people like so this is great to get the audiences attention.  The featured articles are the next big part that makes the magazine appeal to more people. The audience for this magazine generally would be people higher up in the social economic mode as its a very sophisticated magazine which is quite pricey as the articles are £3.99 per month. The cover lines on this magazine are quite simple and are placed all around the main image. These cover lines are an important, as it tells the audience what features inside the magazine and will therefore buy it if there is an article that interests them. Since last year, there were 200,608 magazines in circulation, and from this 141,854 were actively purchased in the UK. On comparison to other magazines, it is found that, Vogue readers spend more on fashion each year than readers of Elle, Marie Claire, InStyle, Vanity Fair and Harper’s Bazaar.

Furthermore, 92% of Vogue readers do buy designer fashion and 93% own premium beauty for hen Vogue readers last recommended a product to their friends, 54% of each case resulted in a purchase, but this is why I would like to add the new feature which is have mentioned because I feel that if that feature is a success people will be saving so much money as high street fashion can just look as good as designer wear and people will only see that if it shown to them in magazine like vogue as it has  high base of female audience who are highly associated with fashion.

The average age of the reader in 33 years, and from this 1,210,000 (87%) are women and 1,88,000 (13%) are men. However, to try and target much younger audiences, Vogue had introduced Miss Vogue, which launched in 2009. The 124 page magazine embodies the inspirational and authoritative spirit that its older counterpart is renowned for, and that talks directly to younger women who love experimenting with fashion and beauty so the new feature which I would like to enable will be a perfect fit for this magazine as it’ll show the readers other readers who have been experimenting with fashion.

The Vogue website launched in the year of 1996, and it had over 2,580,500 viewers. The website offers a 24 hour fashion insider to those to look at while waiting for the monthly magazine to appear and it’s a great way of knowing what will be upcoming in the article, I think that this is a good way to choose favourite outfits of the best ones sent ion so that they can be chosen by the public and then the best one which had the most likes will then get featured, I think this is a fair way as it gets the audience involved so much and that is what will get more people interested into the magazine because they'll feel closely connected in terms of with fashion and other women. The Vogue website is presented in a timed slide show. When you first enter the website, the slide show allows you to search through its pictures with the arrows out to the side of it. This is good as it captures the audience’s attention right away with things they would be interested in knowing about. Right below the show you can choose to access Vogue’s homepage and all the archives, off to the side of those two there is a “log in” button as well as a register button.Vogue.com offers you to create your very own profile which basically allows you to comment on articles, access their Voguepedia, and to get the latest fashion news and this is great because they with my feature added into the vogue magazine they can save their favourite trends and outfits and interact with the females who have been selected to be featured in the magazine because of their outfit.

The average age who visits the website is 28 years old, and 95% of it  is female which is really no surprise as vogue is generally associated and targeted to women, 60% of visitors believe that Vogue.co.uk is the most influential fashion website, compared to Elle (22%), Harper’s bazaar (15%) Vanity Fair (13%) and Instyle (12%). 89% of vogue.co.uk users own Designer fashion, 92% of users own Premium Beauty and 64% of visitors believe that “The advertisements on Vogue.co.uk make them want to try/buy/use the brands, products and services”.

In terms of social media, the Vogue website has seven tabs for seven different sections. They read: contact, updates, press, subscriptions, digital editions and Facebook and Twitter. It has been found that there have been 76,286 email subscribers, 2,357,500 Vogue Facebook ‘likes’ and 2,197,000 Vogue Twitter followers. Overall, the website gets the audience’s attention as it is easy to use and it’s simple to look at and isn't overbearing with bright colours and this is great for the people to get recognition on sites and you'll know that your outfit will be seen worldwide as Twitter and Facebook are very powerful sources due to shares and retweets. The Vogue iPad App had been published since the year of 2012 and this allows the Vogue audience to access all online content via mobile devices. The main feature is the Vogue Daily news app, which is the official mobile app, available across all mobile devices and reaching over 674,500 users. The daily news App features breaking news throughout the day along with exclusive People and Parties galleries to satisfy most loyal Fashion, Beauty, and Culture enthusiasts. The average age of the App user is 34 years old and 95% female. However, to further increase audiences, the Vogue magazine App is expected to be released in early 2015.Vogue’s digital magazine is offered to consumers via iTunes, this allows Vogue’s existing print subscribers access free of charge. Vogue has the largest digital circulation when compared to Elle, Harper’s Bazaar, Marie Claire and InStyle.

As the majority of users of the 4 publications are mainly women aged 25 – 30 years, Vogue could try to attract new audiences by adding in the new feature, which is, have spoken about and I think it will be a great idea for Vogue as well as females interested in fashion. The features audience would be targeted to females aged between 20-40 as that is the average reader age, it would be a monthly feature which will always be in the magazine and I think it would be a huge success because it’s getting the audience more involved within the magazine, it could also get people recognition because it could get shares on social networking sites like Twitter and Face book so again this will be great for the person who has been chosen for that particular month because they can see what other women think of their fashion and not just only UK audiences but other people could get involved as it the media is  a very powerful source and this could be great as new trends could be set and this could mean such a huge success for Vogue because even though we know Vogue is very sophisticated and has a lot of designer clothing, this new feature enables the high street fashion  look which will be great as it gives you the insight to the best of both worlds showing you what looks you can go for and what best suits you.

Marketing my own movie "Secluded"

For my own movie story board trailer idea I have decided that I am going to do a horror/ thriller movie.

The movie that I am going to be directing is called Secluded.

The synopsis of my movie:

The movie is about Aaron Walter( Cillian Murphy) who’s aged in his early 20s and he’s at college studying psychology, he’s one of those unpopular students who people don't really talk too but that doesn't bother him as he enjoys his own company.  One day whilst at the canteen a nice, young and attractive girl named Sienna (Jennifer Lawrence)who  is in his class decided to randomly ask him if he’s got spare change to lend her as she was short whilst buying a drink, he gave her the change and she thanked him and smiled at him.
From that day she had started to see him around and recognised him and she even began to speak to him, she classed him now as a mate. He really adored her company and she liked his company too and since the days went by they spoke more and more Aaron started to realise that he likes her and is very fond of her as a person but as time went on they always seemed to be bumping into each other very too often, but Sienna however not knowing that this guy who she now randomly encountered with spontaneously has grown an unhealthy obsession with her.

Name of the movie: Secluded

Actor: Cillian Murphy (Aaron Walter)

Actress: Jennifer Lawrence (Sienna)

The reason for why I feel these actors will work well in my movie is because they are both very well known actors.

We all know Cillian Murphy as he has been in the hit TV series Peaky Blinders and because of that, he has now become quite popular. I feel Cillian is a great actor to star in my film because I have seen not only Peaky Blinder but lot of his previous films he has starred in. A movie which sticks out to me most is the film called Red Eye which is a thriller. In that movie I feel he played his character so well and he gave off such a sneaky, strange and mysterious character and that's what exactly I need for my film, therefore that's the reason I feel that he could be the only actor in my movie as he'd give the nice effect on the audience of being a bit strange.

Jennifer Lawrence is my main female lead in my movie Secluded. I have chosen her because she is such a great actress as she has such an an amazing job in the Hunger Games films. She has also played a great role in a movie which is thoroughly enjoyed watching which is called
'The House At The End of The Street', that movie as well is a thriller and I think the character she played was great and very believable. The way she was in that movie is how I see her playing the role of Sienna in my movie.

Target audience for my horror thriller movie:

After doing some research on movies and there genres I have concluded that the average usual age for thrillers are 15+ but for horrors it's 18+. For my movie which is a horror/ thriller suspense I’m going to target the audience for the ages 15+. I think this is great as my characters in the movie are quite young and therefore the viewers who watch this will be around the same age and this will then make them feel a part of the movie as the thoughts and feelings that go through them characters could be the same as the ones of the audience.
The fact that I have based the movie  around and in college shows that college students will be a great audience for this movie which are ages 15+ and I feel as they will be strongly connected with the characters in the movie as they could possibly be like them or they might know people like them. The idea of starting a new phase of their life is a big element and this movie will show the atmosphere of a college and how it’s so different to school it'll give them a good insight to the new life and they'll feel a definite close connection.

In terms of the gender of the horror/thriller movies males are most likely to be a fan of horror movies then women but this is due to just stereotypical views.
I feel that generally horror and thriller is associated both with males and females because the viewers are always quite varied and It just depends on the movie itself to whether it interests a person or not.

My Movie

Poster for my movie

My movie poster will have an image in the centre of someone wearing a hoody and there eyes are covered and the background is black and blurred out this is because the person wearing the hoodie will be hidden and i want this effect because i don't want the face to be actually shown to the audience as this will keep a great suspense to the audience as they'll be in thought thinking who is that person is what's the reason for why they are covering there face. I want the background to be blurred and black and this is because i want the main focus to be on the image itself and that will be the person who is wearing the hoody. All you will be seeing is the bottom of the persons face and hat will be just the chin and the lips of the person and this is because it keeps it intriguing to look at, the face of the person will have  smirk and I like the idea of that as it seems quite scary, frightening and a bit condescending and that's great because I want to capture the effect to the audience as it is a thriller horror movie. The camera angle will be straight on view showing us the view of what is in front of us.

This is the image of how my poster will be like with the title secluded written in white underneath his chin.

The title of the movie will be written in the font called 'Herculanum' and this is because I think it's a great font which goes really well with my genre of my film as it's a thriller, because the writing is quite thin and long as well as quite bold its nice as it gives a sort of mysterious eerie effect to the title and it looks good written.

This is how the title will look on the poster and it will be written in the size of 80 and in the colour white, this is to give a monochrome effect as I just want the poster to be black and white.

I think generally just by looking at the image we can tell already the genre of the film because it already just seem like a thriller anyway.

Marketing A Blockbuster

Marketing a blockbuster movie

The movie which I have chosen to talk about is one of my favorite ones, which is called
Jeepers Creepers.

These above are example posters from well known horror movies aged for audience 15+.
The movies are The Purge, Scream, House of Wax and Jeepers Creepers 2.

The way the audience has been targeted:

All these posters above are posters from horror movies which i have watched, the posters are a great way to show us the genre of the movie first. the posters show the genres well because by looking at them we can clearly see that the movies will be horror based, and that is great because instantly we will know whether we will be interested in watching the film or not.

Marketing a movie is really important because if you don't market movies no one will know that your movie exists and that means that you'll have no audience which means no money and in general the movie will be a flop.
Marketing is so important as it gets your movie seen to others and it gets it out there which is great because you need people to know about your movie.

Posters are a great way to promote your films because sometimes before the trailer is released the poster is seen first so you need to make sure that the poster is effective and brings out the type of feeling of the movie just by looking at it, the poster itself needs to speak to you and just give you a good grasp on what the movie could possibly be about. the poster needs to be eye catching as well as interesting. for example the posters above are the Jeepers Creepers trailers and i think they are good examples of posters the reason for this is because the first poster shows us 2 people looking petrified and scared and that's good because the movie is a horror film so the fact they look scared instantly shows us its going to be a scary film. the colours such as black and red is a great way to show us horror as well as thriller too because those colours are associated with danger and evil so we trying to get a good grasp about the way the movie will be.

The second poster of the Jeepers Creepers one is quite good too because it's scary looking as well as intriguing and the fact we see an eye but not the actual thing/person itself shows that whatever it is it's really scary looking and that's great because the poster shows us that this thing is going to have a big impact in the movie, again the colour used in the poster is black as well as brown showing us evil and horror.

The trailer of the movie shows us straight away the movie is going to be scary because the way it starts off as it shows us secluded areas as well as dark scary places and abandoned places such as churches and very strange looking tunnels and the fact that we hear birds screaming which are crows instantly gives us the horror feel.

The music in the trailer is a song which relates to the movie really well because the song shows us what's going to happen next and this is really great as it goes with the movie so well.
the title of the film is a rhyming title this is great because its something which you'll remember as its short and snappy.

title of the movie is very important because I feel if it's snappy that will be remembered much better than a title which is really long and basic.

Marketing a blockbuster of my choice...

A blockbuster  movie is categorised as a movie which maintains a widespread popularity and also a movie which achieves high sales as popularity. a film to be considered as a blockbuster must made a profit of $100 million.

The term blockbuster is relevant because this type of movie is explosive and blows the box office away.

A Blockbuster movie is entertaining often mainly action packed.

What makes the blockbuster successful:

Well known and well liked celebrities as well as a large production budget, a large marketing budget, a range of merchandising, a wide demographic, holiday release dates and a wide release.

Avengers Assemble (2012)

The main star of this movie is Robert Downey Junior who plays the well known as well as well liked character Iron Man. The production budget for this movie is $220 million. The marketing budget is $100 million, there is also a wide range of merchandise which is available and this is great as it gets the movie more recognition. This movie Avengers will appeal to a wide range of people especially those who have have an interest in the comic books and superheroes.

Marvel's blockbuster Avengers Assemble had a great success in its opening weekend and it still was shown nearing the end of May.

Before the film's release there had been a lot of marketing strategies that had been put into place to attract a wide range of  audience, the strategies included posters, billboards and even interviews with the cast and crew.

A lot of shops sold the Avengers merchandises such as kids bed sheets with the characters on them, as well as mugs, keyring, tops, shirts and even model dolls of the characters such as the Hulk and Iron Man. To get the movie even more recognition Disney helped distribute the film worldwide as they signed a deal with Lego which released Avengers sets as part of their new superhero range. The Empire Magazine's youtube channel had interviews with cast of the film asking them questions on what to expect from the movie as well as giving us a little insight into what it was like to film as well as what they enjoyed. The chocolate company Hershey also had a promotion linked with the film. That included a competition with some prizes such as Hershey marvel posters, t-shirts and even a digital comic. The top grand prize was a DVD collection of all the films like Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America and Incredible Hulk which are all linked to the film.

Marvel also looked to the range of channels they have available to them to promote that release. They run ads on their television shows, they release special edition comics meant to raise awareness and excitement for the characters and the film, they even time the release of toys for the film perfectly so that kids see the figures on store shelves and make sure their parents know that they want to see that movie.

Analysing the poster

Colour scheme
The colours used in this posters are deep blue and silver, this to me links with good strength which important to the action genre. The bright red and orange flames seem to be clashing showing that it's a story about good vs evil and that they'll be a clash in the film.

Position of images and text

the image of the characters in are right in the middle of the poster and Iron man seems to be reaching out to something which will attract the audience as it seems he's reaching out to us. the characters are quite apart and standing and framed in various stances and positions to suggest that they are fighting so it kind of enhances the feel of an action packed movie. the movie's title is written below the characters which is great as it stands out in its bold silver font, the silver shows strength as well as giving us a sci- fi type of feel. the A in the title is the  logo of the film which a lot of people will recognize just by looking at the letter itself. The Billing card which is written in a light blue underneath the title isn't very obvious and this is done simply because they don't want the limelight taken of the title or images itself so its a mellow colour as well as quite small because it's not as important to see.

Iconography
the marvel logo above the avengers title is used for its products such as films tvs, comics and etc and they have very high strong brand identity for its fan base.

Niche movie and a block buster comparison

Art films and Blockbuster Movies

Art Films

Art film producers usually show their films at specialty theatres and film festivals. The term “art film” is much more widely used in the United States and the UK than in Europe, where the term is more associated with “auteur” films and “national cinema” (e.g., German national cinema).

Art films are aimed at small niche market audiences, which means they can rarely get the financial backing which will permit large production budgets, expensive special effects, costly celebrity actors, or huge advertising campaigns, as are used in widely-released mainstream blockbuster films.

Melancholia (2011) is an example of a niche film.
Written and directed by Lars von Trier, Melancholia revolves around two sisters during and shortly after one's wedding, while an approaching rogue planet is about to collide with Earth. Von Trier's initial inspiration for the film came from a depressive episode he suffered and the insight that depressed people remain peaceful in catastrophic events.

Audience

Art house movies cater for more discerning cinemagoers, providing advertisers with an ideal opportunity to target affluent and more upscale audiences.
It is found that typical art house movie viewers are more likely than the general population to be highly educated, affluent, professional, as well as being light commercial TV viewers.

Art movie gender profile

Blockbuster Films

The blockbuster film is something which the contemporary film-going public is intimately familiar with. It is characterised by extremely high production costs, massive promotional and marketing campaigns, a wide-release, and is marketed on a pre-sold product or premise, and deliberately crafted to allow for a multitude of product tie-ins and resultant spin-offs.

The Amazing Spider-Man (2012) is an example of a Blockbuster film. Directed by Marc Webb, the Amazing Spider – Man is the story of Peter Parker (Andrew Garfield), an outcast high schooler who was abandoned by his parents as a boy, leaving him to be raised by his Uncle and Aunt. Like most teenagers, Peter is trying to figure out who he is and how he got to be the person he is today. Peter is also finding his way with his first high school crush, Gwen Stacy, and together, they struggle with love, commitment, and secrets. As Peter discovers a mysterious briefcase that belonged to his father, he begins a quest to understand his parents' disappearance and that leads leading him directly to Oscorp and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, his father's former partner.
As Spider-Man is set on a collision course with Connors' alter-ego, The Lizard, Peter will make life-altering choices to use his powers and shape his destiny to become a hero.

Audience
Although, Blockbuster films are targeted to a wider population. There are found to be some gender differences as it is found that 75% Males view these films and the average age range is 26 years. Furthermore, these films are viewed by young professionals and or students/ graduates with disposable income and free time.

The two films I have chosen to talk about are Melancholia and The Amazing Spider-Man.
I will be comparing their posters.

Melancholia (2011)

At first glance the image seems to be a classic wedding shot. It’s very nice to look at and by looking at it seems quite intense. In the image we see a bride she is in a strapless white dress clasping flowers to her chest it seems to be shot in an expensive, way.
Von Trier the director wanted to portray emotion through the poster. And I think it’s shown well as its very intriguing to look at. The director said that he feels as though he had made "a woman's film" and may even lose viewers as he feels men may not find this very intriguing to watch.
The image to be seems to be half-submerged in water and it really reminds me of the drowned Ophelia, in the famous painting by John Everett Millais, surrounded by lilies.

The Amazing Spider – Man (2012)

The poster presents many bright colours and also a very different unique close shot which brings out the power and prominence of the main character Peter Parker. The blue on Spider-Man most probably suggests depression or coldness, which creates a quite curious and cold atmosphere for the audience. The colour red could connote power and evil which mixes into the blue, which could possibly connote his powers are really incredible and that he can choose whether he wants to be the good person or bad.  This a great contrast as it makes you quite intrigued into wanting to know what’s going to happen in the movie.

The use of New York City behind the character of Spider-Man portrays that he must probably have so much power that he owns the city as being on top of it shows the ultimate power he has in his hands. The image shows he could be very superior, and from putting him in such a high place of the city, shows the audience the amount of power he obtains and owns in his ability to do extraordinary things.

Trailer comparisons:
Melancholia (2011)

The beginning of the trailer is of the main character Justine’s wedding. Here the use of the ambient, typical dreamy wedding orchestral music is used combined with scenes of white and characters looking happy, creating a deceiving image.
The titles are written in a particular font. This type of font seems very classical and romantic in fitting with the genre of film. The genre of Sci-fi is then portrayed in the trailer as the text is brought closer and larger to the screen. There is a lot of dull lighting used in the shots. It maybe suggests that their love isn't as strong as they believe, or the idea that their love is going to fade fast, just like the light.
The voice over used is of different characters from within the film and is used as a commentary to construct the main character as well as some of the other characters. It then returns to the character talking which is used to create continuity as to not confuse the audience.  The voice over of the other characters is usually accompanied by the name of the actor or actress however in this trailer their names are never shown.  This may be a factor that separates independent films from big blockbuster films.

The Amazing Spider – Man (2012)

The trailer portrays the film to be a fantasy however there are other elements, which suggest it may contain numerous action scenes, to interest a younger generation as well as anyone interested in action movies. Stereotypically of many fantasy films a young protagonist is presented to exaggerate the impact of a single event which happens to them when they have grown. Different techniques show mystery and it creates a type of intrigue. A series of clips demonstrate the fantasy through the scenes Peter Parker, which shows his abilities are quite unexplainable.
The use of the harp for the beginning of the clip is uncommon among movie trailers. However it is ideal because it evokes sympathy from the viewer. The alternative instrumental purposes to the audience that the film is serious as well as emotive.
An establishing shot of New York City and this is because many of the events occur in the city of New York. The two long shots used at the end of the trailer indicate the amount of power spider man has whilst showing the possibilities the powers bring him.
