A crane shot which is used in movies is mainly used in at the end of the movie, it is used to indicate the film has ended, a great example of a brilliant crane shot is from a movie called Western High Noon.

A tracking shot which is used in films is to give us audience a detailed tour of what the characters surroundings are, it basically follows the character. A good use of a tracking shot is from a movie called Elephant (Alan Clarke, 1989).

Camera panning is done to give us viewers a panoramic view of a settting or a set. This is an example of a camera pan.
For my film music choice I have decided that I wanted to show you the song from the film Hairspray and the song that features in a scene in this movie. The song that features is called "You Cant Stop The Beat".

The
music in general is very fast paced, light-hearted and jolly and this song
would definitely grab anyone's attention as it’s quite different. The song has
such a karaoke effect to it and will definitely get people dancing and singing
to it as its quite repetitive and it’s very easy to catch up on in terms of the
words. I would class this song in general as being a very happy song as it’s
from a musical film which is also a great comedy, the picture-isation of the
song is very bright and fast paced and has so much going on within into it as well
as getting you into a happy mood. The clothing the characters wear in this song
are very bright so therefore again it’ll get you hooked in to watching it as
well as listening to it, another great thing about this song is the crazy dance
moves because they are signature moves from this movie.
The
song also has a very retro feel to it but it’s great as it goes so well with
the outfits of the characters.
The
song is general also really reminds me of the movie Grease as its quite similar
not in terms of the music but in terms of the way the song is asof the mood it gives out it also this movie
does star the amazing John Travolta. (So maybe that is why I feel it reminds me
of the movie Grease.) Songs like this in movies like Hairspray (and aswell as Grease) are generally a way of showing you what the characters thoughts and feelings are, they generally burst into song and dance to express the strength of their feelings in these ways if they cant seem to express them in other way.

FILM: E.T. INSTRUMENTS: (the sounds you can hear which are being played)
The starting of the music sounds very positive straight away as it seems as though its the sound of birds tweeting, this already now gives a positive impact to the movie and it then tells you without saying that the movie will also be a positive movie and the outcomes of the film will be happy.
The instruments that are in this soundtrack are all very orchestral they all link in together like a symphony. You can straight away hear the sounds of the cello, clarinet, flute, french horn, grand piano, trumpet and the violin. I think that all the sounds work very well as they compliment each other all nicely. The sound at the beginning which it starts off with is the flute and I think it sounds great because its very recognisable as you know straight away its from the movie E.T. I also think that when the cello comes in after the flute is playing at the start of the soundtrack it really links together nicely because it goes from a sudden change of sounds to different tempos and sounds. Even though it was a sudden change i still think it has great impact. The trumpet sounds which come in later on are very soft sounds and they are not loud and this is great because its complimenting the music. If the trumpet sounds where very loud and low pitched they wouldn't be good to listen to because it wouldn't go with the music and that would then ruin the softness of which the soundtrack is. The best thing which I like about the soundtrack is the sounds of the grand piano I think that it gives the soundtrack as a whole such a good feel and the vibe it gives out is positive, this definitely creates a great atmosphere as this movie is generally aimed to children. - TEMPO (the speed at which a passage of music is played) The tempo of the soundtrack is all the way through very jolly and happy and the tempo is very fast paced. The fast paced music is definitely good to use in a movie like E.T. simply because it gives you a hint of what the film is going to be like.
- PITCH
The pitch in terms of the quality of sound is good in this soundtrack and it sounds really good everything in the soundtrack flows well nicely which is good as it gives you a nice happy feeling. The music to me also has a nice science fiction feel and that is definitely good as E.T. is a Sci-fi film.
- DURATION
The duration of the soundtrack is 3 minutes and 22 seconds.

- INSTRUMENTS:
The sounds of the instruments which you can hear in this Star Wars soundtrack are mainly drums and trumpets. These sounds are often heard In the beginning of a grand revivals of symphonies. The sound goes from being high pitched to low pitched and it changes as the soundtrack goes on, this is used to create affect as the sounds are different all the way through.
- TEMPO:
The tempo of the soundtrack is quite fast paced as there is a lot going on and there is a lot to listen to, the music varies from sounds and thats good because there is variety.
- PITCH:
The music in which as a whole is quite positive uplifting music, it has a very positive feel to it, it sounds like a good type of music to be played for when someone has accomplished something as its very high pitched. (High pitched sounds generally give out a positive vibe)
- DURATION The duration of this particular soundtrack is 3 minutes and 17 seconds.
FILM: 2001: A SPACE ODYSSEY
- INSTRUMENTS: The instruments that you can hear in this soundtrack from the 2001 movie The Space Odyssey are all orchestral instruments and the ones that have been used are woodwinds, flutes, piccolos, English horns, clarinets, horns, trumpets, bass drums, trombones, percussions, organs, keyboards, strings, harps, triangles, bells, glockenspiels, cellos, violins and double basses. - PITCH:
The pitch of the soundtrack has both degrees of lowness and highness as the tone changes from start to beginning.
- Tempo: The tempo of the music is quite fast paced but as it gradually gets into it even more the tempo gets quicker due to the fact that more instruments are being introduced into the sound sequence. - Duration: The duration of this soundtrack is 2 minutes and 8 seconds approximately.
Out of the three soundtracks I really prefer the E.T. soundtrack simply because I think it works within the movie really well and the fact that its such a recognsisable tune gives it even more of a good feel. E.T. was a film which is loved watching as a child so therefore this is why I really like this one.
The use of music in films is very important it gives great impacts which gets the audience into the scenes even more and I think the music in this clip gives the scene such a good feel in terms of that it makes you want to watch on as the music grabs you in.

I am going to be analysing a short clip which is from the movie called Touching the Void.
At first we see the character Joe who struggling to escape from the crevasse of his climb. The music which is used in the start of this scene is all to create an atmosphere. The music is very slow paced and the speed is slow too this is because the character is at the point where he is in a lot of danger, so the music that is used within the scene is complimented well with what the character is doing. The music also follows the characters journey quite clearly as he is struggling to get up the mountain and the music is very intense because it makes you wonder if he will be okay or not and the music gets high as he gets closer to getting out, this gives us a viewers a little bit of hope for Joe, there is also a orchestral interlude in the film as the music which is used is pretty much like a sympathy as it gets very dramatic at first and then goes quiet.
After this scene there is a sudden change of music and the music goes from thrillingly dramatic to peaceful and calm with uplifting notes, the music is now positive as there is a positive from the scene as he has got out of the crevasse, alive. That then instantly shows us that there is hope for the character and that he will be okay.
As Joe is then lying on the snow, having escaped the mountainous landscape he is relieved and in so much shock he has got out there is also a voice over used showing us his feelings and emotions what he went through. (Its a bit like a narration telling us what he is thinking.)
The music now changes quite quickly again. The music now gets very dramatic and low paced. This sudden change is happening again because there is a problem for him which has occurred and the fact that he now may not be getting out quite easily as he might have thought is shown through the music because it goes dramatic.
The camera panning which is used to skim through the scenes of the area where he is at and the voice over of the character which is used in this scene gives us as an audience such a good feel of what is actually going on and I think that it is really good. It is good in terms of the way it has been used because it shows you the thoughts and feelings of Joe as well as what he is seeing around him.
The camera pans which are used are very quick paced and slow paced. when he is he is skimming the area with his eyes, the music is very fast so that goes nicely with the scene so when the panning is fast that means the music is fast and when the panning is slow the music gets slow too. This is all nicely linked.

In the opening scene you can already hear many sounds and the sounds which are heard are dietetic sounds such as the horses as they are approaching, guns shots as the characters are getting ready to fire, screams of the people who are in danger and crows to show that danger is on its way.
The tempo of the music which the opening starts off with is brilliant as it starts off as very slow because in the first 10 seconds nothing was really happening but this still created so much detail, then as the horses and carriage come along the music tempo gets fast and loud and the sound of drums and violins come in to compliment the piano this definitely created extra excitement, as well as these sounds you have sounds such as the chains of the horses and the metal chains clanging as the horses are getting told to ride faster.
You can also here the gun sounds which the characters are getting ready to shoot and the clicks are all very in link with their movement.
Diegetic sound:
Diegetic sound is any sound that is shown as originated from the source within the films world. The dialogue that belongs to the picture. for example the voices of characters, sounds which are made by objects in the story and music which is represented as coming from instruments in the story space ( = source music).
Diegetic sound can also be used to create a lot of different meanings for an audience.
The dietetic sound which is used in the opening scene is the sound of the horses, guns, screams, crows and the clanging of the chains this is dietetic as it all belongs to the scene which is shown.
Non diegetic sound:
is shown as coming from a subject that is outside the story space. for example the narrator's commentary or the sound effects which are added for the dramatic effect and mood music. For example if a character is walking upstairs in the dark creepy piano music ma be played as the character is approaching the top of the stairs.
The non diegetic sound which is used is the piano and the drums, violin and the glass shatter at the end of the scene. This is been used to create effect.
Ambient:
Ambient sound is used to create a particular atmosphere or a sense of place.
for example rustling leaf noises in the woods while someone is walking.
The ambient sound in the opening scene which is used to me is really great and I think a good example of this is the glass shatter, that has been used in the end of the scene to imply that as the story goes on their will be a lot of danger.
Selective sound:
Selective sound is sound which is used to emphasise certain sounds within an element.
for example bangs and crashes when a gun has been shot.
Synchronous sound:
When a sound effect is matched with another technical event or action and that then reinforces the effect.
Contrapuntal sound:
Is when the sound effect that is used in the sequence does not match the visuals, this is used to create alternative meanings. for example if there is a couple who are running in fields but instead of happy music playing you get screams and gun shots in the background.
SFX:
means sound effects and its the sound effects that have been used within the movie.
For example in the Sherlock opening the SFX sound which is used is the shatter of the glass because that has been added in at the end to create the atmosphere.
Tone:
Tone is anysound which is consideredwithreferencetoitsquality,pitch,strength and source. an example of the tone that has ben used in the Sherlock Holmes video is the background music, the music is quite high pitched showing you that the events which are going to take place are going to be quite fast paced and quick so the pitch compliments what is going to happen really well.
Genre:
The genre is mainly known as the theme of the story for example like what it comes under as a category.
The genre of the Sherlock Holmes movie is known to be a thriller as well as a crime fiction, mystery, adventure - action film.
Theme music: is the sounds or songs that are usually recognisable in melody which are used in the films. For example the soundtrack to the movie Titanic is the song "my heart goes on" and that is known very well by many people as it was featured in the film.
Voiceover (VO)
a voice over is a piece of narration in a film that is not accompanied by an image of the speaker, all you can hear is the voice.
a movie which used A VOICE OVER is the film called CLOCKWORK ORANGE as it starts of with someone speaking and you can not see their face.
i think that using a voice over in a film is a good thing because it can be very beneficial as it gets you into the movie opening even more. If someone starts talking you the instantly get hooked in because you generally want to hear what they are saying as it could be vital information for you to hear about the movie.
Asynchronous sound:
is when the sound originates from outside of the diegetic reality of the film, musical soundtrack.
Silence:
Silence is great to use in films because it creates such an impact that music can not, silence can mean so much, it can give out so many atmospheres such as a scary atmosphere as well as a sad atmosphere. Silence is mainly used in horror movies to create the effect for example if someone is going to pop out the door it'll be all quiet to get the audience to jump to create affect.
The video above is the episode 1 of the TV series called PEAKY BLINDERS and on this page I will be giving you an analysis about the trailer as well as a few photo stills from the series.
So, as the scene opens it starts of with the (brilliant) actor CILLIAN MURPHY who I think suits this role very well.
So lets talk about the setting.
The setting of this scene is in the era of 1919 and it's in the area of Birmingham - Small Heath. The way the episode it begins you can tell that it is in the 1900s as the buildings are old and everything is pretty much in dull.
in this image the sky is very dark and it seems like that there is going to be a storm so this shows you clearly that the character in this still is very important yet is negative because he has such a huge impact even on the weather. The way that he is sitting on the horse clearly shows you he has so much authority as a person as he is riding the horse one handed, this shows me that he's very confident within himself riding and he's confident about his horse too as he's showing the viewers that he is the one in power and that he can and will control anything, even the horse. The placement of his right hand which is on his lap shows me that he is in deep thought because the look on his face gives you that instantly, he looks very serious and there is no speck of smile whatsoever, this shows that he's a serious yet determined character and that he is the boss. The fact that he has come on a horse also shows you that he does have power as being on a horse gives you height so this means that he is above everyone there. (literally!)
If he was brought into the scene in a normal black car, personally I don't think the scene would have been as effective as it is, simply because there would not be any levels in the scene and the fact there is levels in this scene makes it so much better to watch.
The props which are used in the scene are great because they go with the scene very well as they are within the era for example the hat that the character is wearing is a flat cap which were very common to wear in 1900s and they were mainly worn by people who generally where quite important and rich so again this connotes back to him as being an important individual.
The lighting used in the scenes are quite dim and dull and the only thing you can see which is bright is the light from the fire, the fires in these scenes are quite throughout the episode so its shows you that there was a lot of danger and distraction at this time in Birmingham Small Heath. The use of shadows are really good as you can see them very distinctively especially when the main character is riding the horse. This is done to create an atmosphere which is spooky and intriguing and its great because his shadow is the biggest and that shows that he has power over everyone as his shadows overs everything around him.
The costume and make up which is used within these scenes are great as they go very well with the time of the settings because the time that this was happening the clothing that they are wearing is correct. The colour that he is wearing is blue and he also has gold chain on him. The fact that he is wearing a gold chain symbolises to me that he is a very important character as the colour gold is generally associated with importance and royalty.
The space which is used within the scenes is very good and it shows clearly as the people in the village are scared of him so they stay away and hide, this shows the impact this character has on everyone. he also doesn't really socialise with any of the people in the village and this shows he doesn't really care about there thoughts and feelings as he is a negative character which he portrays very well.
The actors. I think the actors play there roles very well. I really like the idea that Cillian Murphy has this negative role as I think it suits him really well as he's done other roles previously such as in the movie Red Eye, where he was the villain and I think that in general him playing these kind of roles suit him.
Colour is absolutely beneficial in a series like Peaky Blinders because it is set in the 1900s, so the colour should be dark and dull because it goes with the scenes. If the colour was bright it wouldn't really make sense in a series like this. The colour is very complimented well as its dark and the fact that the colours in the images are quite dull and muted shows us that it was set in a certain era and again that is good because its given us a feel of nostalgia and that is what we need to see as an audience.
Movement within the scenes is quite important because it shows you how the actors are feeling as well as what they are doing. For example the movement of the people when the main character came on screen was very fast paced and quick, you could see them running away and hiding away as they were very scared of him, so this shows that he has a very superior impact.
I think that these image posters are great as they really show you what the characters are like, for example the first photo of Annabelle Wallis shows me that she looks like a very deceiving character because of her facial expression, the fact that she is not showing her face fully shows you that she is very condescending. I like how you can only see her one eye and the fact that her eye is very wide open thrives you the hint instantly shows me that she is very manipulative.
The Cillian Murphy poster which is in the middle is very good too and I think its great and it shows you so much about the character even before you watch he series. On this image I can tell straight away that he is going to be a very evil, conniving character with a lot of hidden identities and that he is going to cause so much chaos. The fact that he is looking down and has a very sneaky smile shows me that he is definitely up to something and that he is not a good character, the fact that his eye are covered up as well shows me that he is a bad character because he is not sowing us his full identity.
The Sam Neill image on this poster is the one who you can see clearly out of the three and to me it shows that he must be a very important character with a lot of importance. The fact that he has a very stern look on his face shows me that he is a very "straight to the point" kind of character and will do what he has to do.
